Chapter 14

Logan

LOGAN TOSSED THE JOURNAL to the foot of the bed and looked for something to punch. She’d had an affair. His mother, Lois McKinnon, had cheated on his father with another man. Max’s words came back to haunt him— “You may find out something you don’t want to know.” Damn the guy for being right. This was something he didn’t want to know, but it was too late now.

He grabbed his cell phone from the nightstand and speed-dialed his home number. Melissa answered on the third ring.

“She had an affair.”

“Logan? What are you talking about? Who had an affair?”

“My mother. Lois Goddamned Dishonest McKinnon. She had an affair. She cheated on him.”

“Slow down and let me catch up. Are you reading her journal again?”

“Yes. September 1961. She had an affair with a jerk named Nate Ford. Goddamn her. How could she do that to Dad?” He leaped from the bed, too agitated to sit, and began pacing the floor.

“Are you sure?” Melissa asked.

“Positive. It’s all there in black and white. She took a job at the grocery store and met him there. Goddamn her.”

“Calm down, Logan. You’re pacing, aren’t you? You need to relax. There could be a perfectly reasonable explanation for this.”

He stopped pacing, embarrassed she knew him so well. “Why would she write it in her journal if it hadn’t happened? It’s all there from their first meeting in the cat food aisle all the way through to them doing it on the sofa in his living room. Every freaking detail.” He paced again. “I think I’m going to be sick.”

Melissa laughed. “You are not. Calm down. I can’t imagine prim-and-proper Lois having a hot affair. She gets embarrassed when a condom commercial comes on TV. There has to be an explanation.”

“Like what?”

“Maybe it was just a fantasy.”

“Why write it in her journal this way? There are dates and details.”

“Maybe it's fiction,” she suggested. “Maybe your mother wanted to write.”

“Mom? A writer? I don’t think so. She never did that I know of.”

“You didn’t know she kept a journal. Maybe she was a closet fiction writer. Maybe this journal started out as a diary, and when her own life was boring, she made stuff up.” She laughed. “To be honest, I’d have a difficult time filling a journal with what goes on in my life too. Some days are too average. Maybe she made things up to make it more interesting.”

“I don’t know. It all seems so real, Mel. Dates, locations, everything.” He sat on the edge of the bed.

“Maybe your Uncle Larry would know if she wrote stories. Call him and ask.”

“That’s a good idea. I think I will. I’ll call you later and tell you what he said.” He disconnected the call and dialed his uncle’s number.

“Hey, kiddo,” his uncle said when he heard Logan’s voice. No matter his age, to his Uncle Larry, he’d always be kiddo. “How are you getting along with that sister of mine? We’ve been worried about you.”

“I hired a nursing service to help out during the day.
